Accomplice to Slave Flight, Queen Anne's County, Maryland, 1843

Biography:

Robert Allen was a free black resident of Queen Anne's County. In 1843, slaveholders accused Allen of harboring the young slave boy, George, who had fled from William Emory's plantation. Emory, held seventeen slaves in 1840 and twenty-one in 1850. Though Allen denied his involvement, Emory, James Buster, and James Wright testified against him. On May 6, 1843 Allen was sentenced to five years in the Maryland Penitentiary (see: Laws of Maryland, 1818, ch. 157). He was released in 1848.
