Biography:
Emory Roberts successfully escaped from slavery in 1855 when he fled Talbot County, Maryland. When he fled, Emory left his mother, brothers, and sisters behind with their master, Edward Lloyd. His wife also remained in slavery on a separate plantation. Though little has yet been recovered about his life after escape, Roberts is known to have reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was aided there by individuals connected with the Underground Railroad.
