Henry Fields (b. circa 1841 - d. ?)
MSA SC 5496-8680
Fled from Slavery, Cecil County, Maryland, 1859

Biography:

According to William Still's record, Henry Fields successfully escaped slavery in Port Deposit, Cecil County, Maryland, in 1859 at the age of eighteen.  He fled from his cruel master, Washington Glasby, after the decision was made to sell him.  The name "Washington Glasby" most likely meant George Washington Gillespie, of the Eighth Election District (not Port Deposit). Though little information has been recovered regarding his life after his escape, Fields did reach Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was aided by individuals associated with the Underground Railroad.
