Tilghman Mitchell (b. circa 1827 - d.?)

Biography:

Tilghman Mitchell was a free black landowner in Montgomery County Maryland. Mitchell was born, Horice Tilghman Mitchell about 1820 in Maryland, likely to free parents, his mothers name was Lena Mitchell. Tilghman had four siblings, William, Rachel, Elizabeth, and Hezekiah Mitchell.  Tilghman Mitchell, a mulatto was married to Mahaly Squirrel of Montgomery County, MD. Mahaly was formerly the slave of Isaac Moore who manumitted her December 12, 1848. Tilghman Mitchell had a son William Mitchell, and a stepdaughter Harriett Squirrel. Mitchell, marries for the second time on  February 7, 1871, a woman named Caroline Dorsey in Montgomery County.

 In 1861, Tilghman Mitchell purchased a tract of land, called "The Addition to Charley Forrest", from Stephen L. F. Holland, executor of Isaac Holland. Mitchell lived in the same Ashton neighborhood as William Bowen and Thomas Marriott. In 1867, Mitchell purchased additional land for the sum of $143, from William H. Stabler of Montgomery County. Mitchell was a member of the Sharp Street United Methodist Church and was one of the first trustee's at that church. Tilghman Mitchell was also a trustee for the Cedar Mount Cemetery in Montgomery County. In 1888, Tilghman Mitchell and his wife Caroline, granted a plot of land to the church for the purpose of  building a parsonage. It is unknown when Mitchell dies, but he appears on the census for the last time in 1900.
