Samuel S. Tarbutton (b. circa 1818 - d. 1903)

Biography:
Samuel S. Tarbutton was born in Queen Anne's County around 1818 to Samuel
Tarbutton and his wife, Matilda Dudley.1 The 1850 census recorded
Samuel Tarbutton living his wife, Catherine, and six children: George R.
(b. 1841), William J. (b. 1843), John S. (b. 1845), Sarah C. (b. 1847),
and Enoch (b. 1850).2
Samuel Tarbutton's farm
was located in District 2, Queen Anne's County, near the border of District
1.
In 1864, he manumitted the slave Frisby Chamomile, who enlisted with the USCT.3
Catherine had passed away before 1870. That year, the census showed
Samuel married to a woman named Sarah. His son from his first marriage,
George R., was still living with them, along their sons Hiram (b. 1856)
and Edward (b. 1865). Two African Americans also lived with the Tarbuttons:
Abraham Gibbs (b. 1855), a farm laborer; Frances Price (b. 1850), a cook;
and Frances's infant son, John (b. 1869).4 Samuel S. Tarbutton
passed away in Crumpton on September 10, 1903, from chronic Bright's Disease.5
