Biography:

In May 1850, Alfred Dorsey escaped from slavery on the farm of John Jones. In June, Jones placed a runaway advertisement in the Baltimore Sun describing Dorsey as about eighteen or nineteen years old and standing at about 5' 5" or 5'6". Jones further identified the fugitive as "very black and well made, [and] had a whining voice when spoken to." Dorsey had fled wearing "a light colored full-linsey sack coat, cotton osnaburg pantaloons, cotton shirt and cloth cap, [and] lined and bound shoes."1
