MSA SC 5496-051266
Property Owner, District 1, Queen Anne's County, Maryland
Biography:
Samuel Roe Elliott and his wife, Elizabeth (whose maiden name is currently unknown), had at least one child, Louisa Ann.1
In 1806, Elliott purchased the slave Susan, age six, from John Massey.2 He purchased another slave, fourteen-year-old Shadrick, from John Sudler in 1809.3 Elliott owned eight slaves in Queen Anne's County in 1810 and in 1820.4 He was living in Caroline County in 1824, although he still owned his property in Queen Anne's County.5
He died in Queen Anne's County sometime between October and November
of 1830. In his will, Elliot mentioned the "little negro Girl named Emeline
about nine years old." Elliott instructed that Emeline would receive her
freedom at the age of thirty, and the rest of his slaves at the age of
thirty-five.6 These included William Wesley Johnson and William
Whales.7 He also identified his real estate as part of a tract
called "Mothers Care," which he bought from John Elliott Sr., as well as
land that he bought from Benjamin A. Elliott.8 In 1834, following
Elliott's death, the slave Maria
fled from his estate.9
