Biography:

A trustee for Joshua Chapel, Marshall James Jones was born free in 1828.1 His parents Amos Jones and Araminta/Ann had two other children: Mary J. and Isaac S. Jones (who also became a trustee for Joshua Chapel).2 On July 11, 1850, Marshall, along with his sister Mary Jane Jones applied for a certificate of freedom. Marshall was described as five feet six inches high with light complexion and a sear on his right arm below the elbow.3 Fifteen days later, the enumerator for the 1850 census recorded Marshall as twenty-two years old and still living with his parents and siblings. He and his father Amos were both laborers.4

By July of 1860, Marshall married Julietta and had two children: Eliza A.E and Isaac Jacob. At thirty-one years old, Marshall was a laborer and had $100 of personal estate.5 By 1870, Marshall increased his possessions and had $500 real estate and $200 of personal estate and was also listed as a U.S citizen. In addition to his two children: Eliza A.E and Isaac Jacob, Marshall and Julietta had five more children between 1860 and 1870 named Julia E., Martha J., Eben, William, and Marshall J. Jr.6 He, along with Samuel G. Dorman, appraised Isaac Cotton’s (b.1830) inventory in 1882.7
