Isaiah Caulk (b. circa 1837 - d. ?)
MSA SC 5496-51543

Joshua Chapel Trustee, Free Black
Kent County, Maryland

Biography:

Son of Noah and Araminta Caulk, Isaiah was born between 1837 and 1838. He had a brother named Ellis, born in 1839. In 1850, he was considered a laborer despite his young age of twelve.1 In 1860, his father most likely died and therefore Isaiah continued serving as a laborer and, as the oldest son, could have inherited the $200 of real estate and $50 of personal estate that his father had.2

Isaiah served as a trustee for Joshua Chapel, an African Methodist Episcopal Church in Morgnec, Kent County, Maryland.3 He was about 28-years-old when he signed the Joshua Chapel mortgage in 1869.4 The fulfillment of the mortgage was signed in 1883 and is clearly signed Josiah Caulk, so it is possible that either Isaiah and Josiah sounded similar and therefore were recorded differently, but were the same person, or Isaiah died before the fulfillment of the mortgage and therefore Josiah Caulk (born in 1860 to Ann Caulk) may have replaced him as a trustee in 1883.5

At this point there are no records of when Isaiah died.
