Biography:
Mary was an enslaved girl who was owned by Benjamin Phillips of Fishing Creek in Dorchester County, Maryland. Mary was the daughter of Jerry and Martha, two slaves who were also owned by Phillips. On or about September 14, 1814, Mary and her family were taken away by British soldiers, from the home of Benjamin Phillips. At the time Mary was five years old and worth $175.
Following the war
Benjamin Philips filed a claim for his five slaves with B. L. Lear an
agent who submitted the evidence to the Department of State. Maryland
slave owners were awarded $280 for each slave they lost during the war.
